Behind the Design of Sail Residences: A Q&A about Coastal Inspiration, Urban Flow, and Thoughtful Living

Writer's picture: AbbyOfSMDCAbbyOfSMDC

How do you create a home that blends the calm of Manila Bay with the dynamic energy of the Mall of Asia Complex? Sail Residences, designed by one of the country's leading architectural firms, ASYA, masterfully balances coastal inspiration with contemporary urban living. From its sailboat-inspired architecture to its seamless integration of nature and function, every detail was carefully crafted to enhance the way residents live, work, and unwind.

In this exclusive Q&A, ASYA Principal Architect, Albert Yu, and SMDC Vice President and Head of Design, Innovation & Strategy, Jessica Sy, share the vision, challenges, and unique design elements that make Sail Residences more than just a place to live—it’s a thoughtfully designed community that embodies movement, connection, and purpose.

Q: What was the overarching vision for Sail Residences when you began the design process? How does it reflect the lifestyle aspirations of its target residents?

Architect Albert Yu:

Sail Residences was designed to strike a balance between tranquility and urban vibrancy. We wanted to create a sanctuary within the city—one that provides respite from the hustle and bustle while keeping residents connected to Manila’s dynamic culture and lifestyle.

Q: How did you integrate the contrasting elements of Manila Bay’s serenity and the Mall of Asia Complex’s energy into the development’s design?

Jessica Sy:

The location itself naturally presents this duality. Positioned between the shores of Manila Bay and the vibrant SM Mall of Asia Complex, Sail Residences delivers both relaxation and excitement. The development maximizes bay views, incorporates generous living spaces, and offers amenities that promote both leisure and connectivity.

Q: Were there particular inspirations that influenced the overall aesthetic of Sail Residences?

Arch. Yu:

We recognized the shift in how people live, work, and interact post-pandemic. This inspired us to design spaces that prioritize convenience and flexibility, such as dedicated delivery hub areas, open spaces, and well-planned communal areas. Additionally, we took inspiration from Manila Bay’s waves and shoreline, incorporating horizontal elements with dynamic alignments on the balconies to reflect the natural movement of water.

Q: How did the proximity to Manila Bay influence the selection of materials and colors?

Jessica Sy:

The design prioritizes harmonization with the coastal environment. Light-colored facades reflect sunlight, reducing heat absorption, while strategically placed balconies maximize airflow and ventilation. This ensures not only aesthetic appeal but also energy efficiency and sustainability.

Q: Sustainability is a growing priority in modern developments. What measures were taken to ensure Sail Residences remains environmentally conscious?

Arch. Yu:

One of our initiatives was designing balconies throughout the façade to serve dual purposes—not just maximizing views, but also acting as architectural canopies for sun protection and rain shelter. This creates a layered effect that visually breaks the building’s mass while improving energy efficiency.

Q: How do the amenities and common spaces at Sail Residences enhance the resident experience?

Jessica Sy:

We aimed to create a holistic living experience by combining relaxing and active spaces. Hotel-like interiors and oversized amenities make Sail Residences feel like a luxury retreat. The clubhouse, pool areas, and promenades provide areas for social interaction, wellness, and leisure—encouraging a balanced lifestyle. More than just recreational spaces, the common areas were thoughtfully designed to foster a sense of community, creating opportunities for residents to meet, interact, and build meaningful connections with their neighbors.

Q: Coastal living is often associated with relaxation and well-being. How does Sail Residences foster a sense of calm and connection to nature?

Arch. Yu:

By maximizing views of Manila Bay and incorporating open-air spaces, we enhance the residents’ overall well-being. Thoughtfully designed interiors, a strong connection to outdoor spaces, and stress-reducing natural elements all contribute to a peaceful yet engaging environment.

Q: What specific architectural or interior design elements set Sail Residences apart from other developments in the Bay Area?

Arch. Yu:

A defining feature is “the in-between”—a seamless corridor that connects two towers, abstracting a sail’s motif. This thoughtful design allows effortless movement while providing unique perspectives of the surrounding landscape.

Q: What makes Sail Residences more than just a place to live? How does its design reflect the lifestyle of its future residents?

Jessica Sy:

Sail Residences was designed with purpose—it’s not just about building a home, but about creating a community that enhances everyday living. Every detail was crafted to support a seamless, modern lifestyle, offering residents convenience, comfort, and spaces that encourage relaxation and connection. The result is a place where people don’t just reside, but truly thrive—whether it’s through well-thought-out amenities, open spaces that foster interaction, or design details that make daily life more enjoyable.
